As we delve deeper into autumn, you might notice some hair damage leftover from the summertime. The change in seasons in the perfect excuse to switch up your hair care routine and give those locks some extra loving! Here are five key tips for preventing and repairing hair damage this autumn.

Start Shampooing Less

You probably already know that over-washing your hair can strip it of natural oils and cause strands to dry out. Skin gets drier during cold months and the skin of your scalp is no exception. Washing your hair too frequently can cause the scalp to get dry, itchy, and flaky. Try using dry shampoo in between washes to keep oil at bay. If you’re prone to dryness or flakiness, consider using special dry scalp or anti-dandruff shampoo.

Use Oil-Based Products

When your locks are feeling dehydrated and brittle in the winter, there’s nothing like a nourishing oil to add a surge of moisture. Natural oils that are good for your hair include argan, coconut, avocado, almond, marula, and macadamia. From shampoos and conditioners to leave-in products and treatments, there are hundreds of products on the market with these oils included in the ingredients. Whether your hair is curly, straight, fine, or thick, there is a nourishing oil product for you to use!

Invest in Hair Masks and Deep Conditioning Treatments

Conditioning your hair regularly is a good way to keep it moisturized, but sometimes those locks need a little extra TLC. Deep conditioning products and hair masks are usually made of richer, more luxurious ingredients. This means the product can better penetrate the strands to treat dry, damaged hair from root to tip– not just the ends! Since deep conditioners are intensive products, it’s best to only use them once every week or two. Overdoing it with deep conditioner can weigh down your hair and leave it feeling oily. If you’re a fan of taking hot baths in the cooler months, apply your deep conditioner then and relax for 30 minutes. Use Leave-In Products

When you wash your hair and get out the shower, your work isn’t done. Leave-in conditioners are key when it comes to repairing and preventing damage. While these products won’t pack as much of a punch as deep conditioner will, it’s a quick, easy way to add moisture and nourishment back into your hair. Many leave-in conditioners also serve as heat protectants and detanglers, which means you won’t be causing excessive damage brushing through tangles or using heat styling tools. Leave-in products come in a range of price points and can be purchased at drugstores and beauty retailers. There’s no reason to break the bank to keep your hair smooth, shiny, and protected!

Switch to a Darker Hair Color

Blonde hair is beautiful. The damage bleach can do is not. Swap your platinum locks for a deeper shade this autumn. Dark hair, dyed or natural, looks shinier and healthier than blonde hair. Lighter hair strands are hollower than dark hair, causing light absorption rather than reflection. Since dark hair is often thicker, it can also hide damage, split ends, and fly-away hairs better than blonde hair will. When you bleach the hair, you’re stripping the color out of it, but when you dye it dark, you’re adding color molecules. In addition to decreasing the look of damaged hair, dark tones look beautiful with autumn/winter colors and will always be on trend for the cooler seasons!
