The internet has given people around the world the ability to post whatever they want online for everyone to see. This has not only resulted in amazing hair color and style trends that catch fire in a matter of days but in hilarious fails that have us rolling. Check out these 5 beauty battle wounds and fails, courtesy of the internet.

1. Bad Choppy Bangs

Storyful gave us a nice recap of this woman’s choppy bang fail. Would you try to cut your bangs? We wouldn’t recommend it. (See the original video here.)

2. Nail Fail

Swirl nails seem easy until you have to do it at home. Do yourself a favor and stick to the salon.

3. Curl-Be-Gone

This gal was attempting to create flowing curls, and we feel bad about the results. Caution: hot styling tools can be dangerous.

4. Comic(al) Nails

Comic book-themed nails? More like comical nails. This fail made us giggle.

5. Fringe?

The Laugh Out Loud YouTube channel shared this woman’s bang disaster. Fringe is meant to look like delicate, wispy bangs that are slightly arched around the forehead, however, this fringe doesn’t fit. Note: don’t try to create fringe at home.

Which one of these fails had your sides splitting? Do you have your own beauty disaster to share with us? Show us on Facebook!

Coloring your hair can be a scary process. Whether it’s your first time taking the colorization plunge or you have done it dozens of times since buying your first box of “Blonde Bombshell” in high school; there are a lot of unknowns that can make the process daunting.
If you are a coloring virgin or veteran you probably have questions, let us provide a few answers.

What Is The Benefit Of Salon VS Home?

This is a debate that you have probably heard time and time again, although the pros and cons list is long, the answer comes down to a few major things: the condition and integrity of your hair, the ingredients of the products, and the risk of over processing.
When you color your hair at home you run the risk of over processing from leaving the color in too long. This can cause all sorts of problems, from a “gooey cuticle” to a broken strand.
The biggest problem for home kits, however, is that brands can be tricky when it comes to listing the ingredients for their haircolor. Although they may not be listed, they can still include things like sulfates which, among other ingredients, can be harmful to your hair.

In the end, salon color is more often safer than the at home option. Not only are trained professionals handling your hair, but they also have access to professional products. At Salon Branca, we utilize L’Oreal Professional. L’Oreal Professional hair color that is available in salons is sulfate free and works hard to keep their formula gentle on hair.
While some “sulfate-free” home dyes exist, they can be full of additives that cause similar problems. To avoid the risk of major damage to your tresses, book an appointment at a salon.

Hair coloring

Are Hair Coloring Chemicals Harmful?

No matter if you have your hair colored in a salon or at home, the chemicals used can be harmful. While the chemicals in box dyes are far worse than what you will find a salon, you are still changing the color of your hair, and that process can cause damage.
Cosmetologists go to school for a substantial amount of time and there is a reason for that. There are so many aspects, from application skills to chemical knowledge, that you can not learn from a box. Box color doesn’t take anything about YOUR hair into consideration, stylists have mastered that knowledge so as to help cause the least amount of damage to your hair during this process and keep it healthy.
This is yet another reason that getting your hair colored in a salon is so important. Your stylist can take into account the type and condition of your hair so as to formulate the healthiest and best color for you. By understanding your hair the stylist can help keep it hydrated and healthy.

I Want to go From Black to Blonde – Can I?

Short answer: Yes. Long answer: Not in one visit. Going from a dark colored hair to a light colored hair can be a trying process, with many rounds of bleaching being needed to accomplish your desired shade. All of that bleaching and stripping can take time and cause major damage to your hair. Unless you want to end up looking like Tony the Tiger™, take your time and let your stylist handle the complexities of what could potentially turn into a very traumatizing situation.

Why Should I Take my Skin Tone Into Consideration?

No matter your skin tone you can pull off any color. That said, your skin tone will play a big part of the shade that will complement you best. By working with a stylist that can personally mix a color that is not only unique to you, but complementary to your tone, you can get the perfect color, and a unique look that screams “you.”

Could My Hair Color Look Different Than the Swatch?

Anything can affect the coloring process and cause changes in shade, tone and dimension. The biggest caveat of these changes comes from the starting color of your hair. Fortunately if you go to a salon, it is your stylist’s job to know and foresee any issues that could arise in your hair coloring process. By working with you they can understand your hair and how it will react with the coloring process to give you your own unique color.

How do I Keep the Color From Fading?

There are a few things you can do to keep your color from fading.

  • Wash Less– Utilizing dry shampoo and washing your hair less can not only extend the life of your hair but increase the overall health.
  • Use Specialized Products– Products made specifically for color treated hair exist for a reason – and this is it. By using these products on your color treated hair you will help retain the shine and deep color for longer.
  • Condition. Condition. Condition.– Moisture tends to be the rule for hair and nowhere is that more true than in color processed hair. Going swimming? Condition. Washing your hair? Condition.
Conditioning will not only keep your hair healthy, but keep that color strong and happy.

How Often Should I Get My Roots Touched Up?

Hair grows. It’s what it does. When it grows you get not-so-beautiful roots that need to be taken care of. Ideally, you can safely re-color your hair every 3-6 weeks, and that is about the time table to keep to when doing root touch-up so as to avoid chemical damage.

Why is a Consultation Important?

While you can schedule an appointment at any time to get your hair colored, it is highly recommended to schedule a consultation. Often, consultations are free of charge and will give you and the stylist extra time to plan for the work to come, and to completely understand your hair and answer any questions or concerns that may be on your mind! This can not only give you better service, but better care and protection for your hair and the color it will hold afterwards.

Whether your nerves are settled or still a little rumbly, schedule a consultation, and let us guide you through the process. One of our skilled stylists would love to sit down with you and help you find not only the right shade but the perfect plan to get there!

In the 1950’s beauty and fashion was starting a revolution. Although fashion shows and cat walks had been around since the 1800s, everything began to change in 1947 when Christian Dior unveiled his groundbreaking “Corelle” collection. From that point on everything was different.
Fashion was in demand, and edgy new styles were sought after. This demand for new looks and boundary pushing style continued, with changes in both clothes and hair. Something which cemented itself in 1954 when a little over 300 people gathered in London to watch the first live, on stage hair styling competition: The L’Oreal Professional Color Style Trophy Contest.
This contest has been held yearly through Europe since then with the attendees growing from those first few hundred to over eight thousand. And this year, for the first time, this competition has come to the United States.

Studio Branca first heard about the arrival of the competition to the States last year when Mark Branca our fearless leader and founder was attending the finals in Portugal. It was from that day forward that we began our work, eager and ready to give our best and stun the world with what the United States, and Studio Branca, can do.

In the months before the images of our final style were due, the staff of Studio Branca met on Sunday evening’s discussing ideas, brainstorming looks, scouring old competitions and high fashion magazines. We looked at pictures, we watched runway shows, and we let our imagination run wild as we created looks that we were proud of, all in the hopes of being selected as one of the five finalists in the six categories of the competition and seeing our styles walk the runway in New York City.

Submitting entries in each of the areas; Color & Style, Color, Styling and Cutting, Men’s Image and Young Talent was a lot of work – but well worth the effort, as we found out a few weeks ago that we will be sending not just one, but three different stylists to the finalists competition in New York City.

This is a huge opportunity as we are the only salon in the US to be sending multiple finalists, and the only one in our area to be competing for such a huge award! Our hard work definitely paid off!

For the finals we will be sending the following finalists to the competition.

So, you are ready to pursue your dreams and become a cosmetologist. You have researched schools, you may even have a dream salon all lined up to apply at after you are done. You may even currently work part-time at the desk of one.
But all of that planning and prepping might not give you a realistic picture of what you are heading into.
If you are ready to enter the world of cosmetology, here are five things to keep in mind as you prepare to begin your new career.

Ready for Salon life

  • Willingness To Talk To Anyone

While being shy is not necessarily a deal breaker for a future as a cosmetologist, it definitely helps to be willing to strike up a conversation with anyone. You will have people from all walks of life in your chair, and having a good conversation with them is definitely what salons are known for. Get ready to learn about people and histories in a way you haven’t thought about.

  • Flex For The Good and Bad

While it is true that a career in cosmetology is known for its flexibility, that flexibility goes both ways. It can be flexible for you, and you will have to be flexible for it. Being that flexible can be a bit trying in the beginning, but once you get used to it it can reveal a rewarding schedule that can benefit your life.

  • Work Hard, Play Hard

You have probably heard this adage for years, but now you will get a chance to experience it. Even if you work for a salon you will still be doing a lot of legwork to build your clientele. It will be hard work, but all of the work can reap amazing rewards in the long term, as well as a client list you can be proud of.

  • Stand Up Tall

With all of that hard work building your clientele comes a lot of time on your feet. So much so that purchasing a good pair of sturdy, well-supported shoes should be high on your list. And don’t dig on compression socks, they will be your life saver! Are you ready to hit 10,000 steps every day? It will be easy-peasy on the floor of a salon.

  • Thick Skin Required

While your ultimate goal is to make each and every one of your clients happy, sometimes that doesn’t always happen. And sometimes those unhappy customers can be very loud; you are going to need to develop a thick skin and master keeping a level head in confrontation in order to weather some of these storms, but you can do it!

Still have questions? Make an appointment for one of our amazing services and witness from the other side of the chair what salon life is like!
Let us make your tresses as brilliant as the future ahead of you!

Ready for Salon life

The adage as most people know it is that you should get your haircut every six to eight weeks, but how true is that? And more importantly, how many people follow it.
Surveys have shown that most women will wait anywhere from 12 weeks to 6 months for a visit to the salon and while that isn’t totally off base for some hair types – others will need much more care than that.
In fact, that is what the rule for cutting your hair, and how often you should do it, comes down to: what type of hair you have.

How Often Should You Cut Your Hair

Based on Hair Type

  • Curls of the Tight, Coarse Variety

    12 Weeks

    How often to cut hair

If your hair is coarse in texture and full of crazy tight curls the general rule is 12 weeks. Your hair won’t develop split or dead ends before then thanks to your awesome curls. Even then, unless you want to keep it short, you shouldn’t need to cut off more than a quarter inch each visit.
Pro Tip: Find a stylist that specializes in curls to help keep those locks even and perfect.

  • Virgin Hair

    12 Weeks

    How often to cut hair

You know the kind, the never dyed, only exposed to heat once a quarter hair that many of us left behind in high school. If you are still rocking those perfectly babied locks you shouldn’t need a trim more often than 12 weeks, the risk of it looking frayed is very low with this hair type.
Pro Tip: The only exception to this is if you have longer hair, as long hair needs a bit more upkeep than shorter locks. We are talking rib cage to waist long (or longer!) here.

  • Long Wavy Locks

    8-12 Weeks

If you are doting that long hair (meaning: limited heat, weekly masks etc.) you can wait 12 weeks easy between cuts. Otherwise, or if you are going for a specific shape, you are going to want to make an appointment about every 8 weeks to keep your locks looking healthy and happy.
Pro Tip:If you have long layers that you like to keep framing your face, you need to get a trim every six weeks to keep them in place.

  • Fine, Lengthy Curls

    8-12 Weeks

    How often to cut hair

If your curls fall anywhere from loose waves to perfect spirals than 12 weeks is your magic number. If your hair is finer, or maybe a tad too dry, then you are going to want to keep it closer to 8 weeks as too much length can make them look stringy or stretched.
Pro Tip: Keep those curls hydrated with bi-weekly masks to stretch out the time between cuts, and keep your hair generally healthy

  • Layers Everywhere

    6 Weeks

    How often to cut hair

If your hair is full of all the layers needed to keep your hair looking raged, edgy, and purposefully windswept you are going to want to head in every six weeks to keep that style looking fresh. Any longer than that and those layers are going to look wonky and more distressed-ragged than sexy.
Pro Tip:If you are growing out your hair from a heavily layered do, there is going to be an awkward grow-out period. Work with your stylist to find a good in between look that will help you to go from one to the other with ease.

  • Fine Hair of All Lengths

    4 to 6 Weeks

    How often to cut hair

Fine hair is the bane of many people’s beauty existences. It will be gorgeous for weeks and then overnight deteriorate into a sad, saggy mess. The challenge will be to keep its shape without cutting too much off. You’ll have to gauge your gap based on routine and your personal hair needs, but no more than 6 weeks seems to be the rule of thumb on this hair type.
Pro Tip: Products like dry shampoo can help to keep your hair full of life and omph for those times before a cut when your everyday routine just isn’t cutting it.

  • Short Hair

    4 Weeks

Whether you have a bob, a lob, or a short wavy cut you are going to need to head to the salon quite frequently in order to maintain it. More than just cutting off dead ends, this is making sure that your style stays fresh and clean and keeps you looking great.
Pro Tip: Schedule a few appointments a few months out, that way you don’t find yourself waiting to get into your stylist and hopelessly watching your perfect short cut grow out.

Do you fall under the old six-eight week rule, or are you more of a twelve-week long-hauler? Either way, if you are due (or overdue) for a trim or ready for a whole new look give us a call and we can schedule your appointment with one of our master artisans.
